Focusing on both hand building and wheel throwing we will start with basic forms for incense burners or simple sculptural bases for beast / animal / Chimera sculptures. Come with ideas, pictures and drawings of creative beings. (Still haven’t seen a pangolin)
We will also concentrate on bowls, clean curves and shapes based on use and beauty. Trimming is one of Steve’s real loves as well as subtractive carving for texture and weight! Time will be spent on color, slip painting and patting and color choice for glazing.
Steve has been potting for 35 years after falling into the art form while teaching in Japan. Concentrating now on wood-fired, reduction, cone 10 to 12 and cone 6 electric-fired bunnies, you can see his work at bostonpottery.com as well as Local Pottery in Norwell MA and Lacoste Gallery in Concord MA. Firing twice a year at Gustin Ceramics’ wood and wood-soda kilns for the last 22 years has helped shape his work as well as the camaraderie of firing with groups of accomplished potters. The openings for these kilns are open to the public!
